Steers was established in East London in 1899. The business in those early years consisted of the manufacture and re-upholstery of furniture. Being in the furniture trade, local removals were undertaken with a horse drawn cart and the customer had to do his own loading and off-loading of furniture.

During the 1932 - 1937 depression, Mr. Steer bought his first truck. With the outbreak of war in 1939, the demand for furniture storage grew and so did the company.

During 1970 Steer & Co. joined the Afrovan franchise of furniture removers and changed it’s name to Steers Afrovan.

In 1976 the business was moved from the premises it had occupied in the centre of East London to the new 3.37 Hectare custom designed premises in Wilsonia with a storage area of 2809 square meters.
